How to Compare Snowbird Travel Insurance Beyond the Price

Price is the easy part. The differences that matter at claim time are in the wording. Here's how to compare snowbird travel insurance properly.

It's tempting to compare travel insurance on price alone. But the differences that matter at claim time are rarely in the premium — they're in the wording. Two policies with similar prices can respond very differently to the same situation.

This guide helps you compare snowbird travel insurance on what actually matters.

Start with the emergency medical benefit

Emergency medical coverage is the core of snowbird insurance. Look at:

  • The coverage limit — the maximum the policy will pay for emergency medical expenses.
  • What's included — hospital stays, doctor visits, ambulance, diagnostics, prescriptions, and medical evacuation back to Canada.
  • Deductible options — the amount you pay out of pocket per claim before the insurer pays.

Then look at stability and pre-existing conditions

For most snowbirds this is where policies differ most. Compare:

  • Stability periods for your age and trip length.
  • The definition of "stable" — including how medication changes and pending tests are treated.
  • Condition-specific exclusions that may apply to your health.
  • Eligibility and medical questionnaires — whether one is required and at what age.

Exclusions and limits

Read the exclusions section before you buy. Common ones that catch snowbirds off guard include high-risk activities, undisclosed conditions, and certain condition-specific lookbacks. A lower premium can come with tighter exclusions.

Deductibles and risk

A higher deductible lowers your premium; a lower one raises it. Choose based on what you could comfortably pay out of pocket per claim, not just on the monthly savings.

Trip length and plan type

Make sure the policy covers your full trip. Some plans cap the length of a single trip, and annual multi-trip plans cap each individual trip. Read more in Single-trip vs multi-trip insurance.

Compare side by side

Use the provider comparison to see active options side by side, then read each policy's wording for the details above. The goal isn't to find the cheapest policy — it's to find the one that responds the way you need it to if something happens.

A policy that's a little more expensive but covers your condition honestly is usually better value than a cheaper one that doesn't.
