Pending Tests, Referrals and Travel Insurance: Why They Can Matter

A pending test, a specialist referral or recent treatment can affect eligibility or stability. The wording differs — here's what to know.

If you're waiting for test results, have a specialist referral, or recently had treatment, it can affect your travel insurance — sometimes more than you'd expect. The wording differs between policies, so the same situation may matter more under one plan than another.

How pending tests can affect coverage

A condition is often considered "stable" only if nothing is pending during the lookback window — no waiting test results, no scheduled investigations, no recommended surgery, and no specialist referral (received or recommended). Verified policy wording shows that some policies treat a pending test or referral as breaking stability, and some make pending tests an eligibility question altogether.

A pending test does not automatically make you ineligible under every policy. The wording differs — confirm what applies to the plan you're considering.

Recent treatment

Recent treatment — a procedure, a hospital stay, or a new therapy — can also fall within the stability window. Some policies include "minor ailments" exemptions for short, resolved issues, but the thresholds vary. Don't assume a small, resolved issue will be treated the same way across policies.

What to do

  • Note the dates of any tests, referrals or treatment, and what they were for.
  • Check whether the policy treats pending items as a stability issue or an eligibility issue.
  • If something is unresolved, confirm how it affects the plan before you buy rather than guessing.
  • Keep records — you may need them at claim time.
